My advice is to start building credit as soon as you turn 18. There are many ways to build credit & the easiest way is to setup a secured credit card in your own name. Now, all of these credit cards do report to all 3 of the major credit bureau’s (Transunion, Equifax & Experian).
If your not familiar with what a secured credit card is, it’s basically putting down a security deposit that the company holds as collateral in case you stop paying. But as long as you pay on time, they usually refund you the full amount after 1 year.
1st OPTION
Discover Secured Cc:
It offer a $0 Annual Fee where most beginner credit cards usually charge an annual fees. The Card offer rewards points & is the only secured credit card on the market that’s offers rewards. Basically offers 1% everything & 2% on restaurants & gas stations. Also, the card offers a Free FICO score, which is also usually not offered with secured credit cards. Discover is a well known company & the secured card does not look any different than the normal discover credit card, so you don’t feel discouraged using it in public.
2nd OPTION
Citi Bank Diamond Secured MasterCard:
This card also has 0% Annual Fees & no foreign transaction fees which is usually never offered with secured credit cards. The best thing about this card is that you can upgrade to the citi double rewards points card after 1 year. Which is hands down one of my all time favorite cards b/c it gives you double the cash back & I use that card all the time.
3rd OPTION
Capital One Secured Cc:
This is very easy one to qualify for, plus you have access to capital one lounges all across the US. This card only has a $49 security deposit to start, which is one of the lowest in the market & you can qualify for a credit limit of $200.
4th OPTION
Open Sky Credit Card:
Now, if you can’t get any of the other options, then this is the best card to start because they don’t even pull your credit report. The only bad thing about this card is that they charge a $35 annual fee, guaranteed you will get approved for this card because they do not pull your credit report for approval.
5th OPTION:
CreditOne Platinum Unsecured CC:
Now, this one makes the list because it is a unsecured credit card, meaning NO SECURITY DEPOSIT. This card is fully unsecured & this is the best option if your not looking to put down a security deposit. This is the best option for someone with poor credit between 300-650. The Credit limit starts at $300, so higher than the secured cards. Plus, it also Offers a 1% cash back on all eligible purchases including groceries & gas stations.
